Abstract
The reception complex in the citadel of Shawbak incorporates an īwān plan that follows the qā‘a
model and the tripartite composition of the walls. The comparative study of these and of other
architectural features (arches, niches, decoration, coverings) allows placing the complex in the
Ayyubid architectural tradition. However, it does not propose a conclusive date for its construction:
this could have been during the reign of al-Mu‘aẓẓam ‘Isa (1197-1226) or in the second quarter of
the 13th century.
